Established in Ballarat, Victoria in 1935 Haymes Paint has built an enviable reputation for one thing, a single-minded dedication to quality. A fourth generation family company Haymes now supplies premium quality products around Australia through the paint specialist network.
At the turn of the century, David’s grandfather Thomas Jefferson Haymes opened a combined paint contracting and general hardware business in a small shop at 57 Bridge Street, Ballarat. Like other painters of his time, Thomas was forced to make his own paints using difficult to obtain materials and operating in the tiny space available from the back of his store. The paints and colours those days were a far cry from present day “ready to use” products, but properly prepared, stood the test of time. Many of Ballarat’s historical buildings being renovated today reveal the colours applied so long ago.
In February 1924 Thomas was accidentally killed at the Ballarat Rifle Range. The business passed to his three sons, Thomas Steffee Haymes, John Churchill Haymes and David’s father Henry James Haymes. In 1935 Henry left T.J.Haymes to start his own paint manufacturing business. On the 29th May the company of Henry Haymes Pty Ltd was registered selling products to the T.J.Haymes family contracting and hardware business and to the wider market.
