Haymes

Established in Ballarat, Victoria in 1935 Haymes Paint has built an enviable reputation for one thing, a single-minded dedication to quality. A fourth generation family company Haymes now supplies premium quality products around Australia through the paint specialist network.

At the turn of the century, David’s grandfather Thomas Jefferson Haymes opened a combined paint contracting and general hardware business in a small shop at 57 Bridge Street, Ballarat. Like other painters of his time, Thomas was forced to make his own paints using difficult to obtain materials and operating in the tiny space available from the back of his store. The paints and colours those days were a far cry from present day “ready to use” products, but properly prepared, stood the test of time. Many of Ballarat’s historical buildings being renovated today reveal the colours applied so long ago.

In February 1924 Thomas was accidentally killed at the Ballarat Rifle Range. The business passed to his three sons, Thomas Steffee Haymes, John Churchill Haymes and David’s father Henry James Haymes. In 1935 Henry left T.J.Haymes to start his own paint manufacturing business. On the 29th May the company of Henry Haymes Pty Ltd was registered selling products to the T.J.Haymes family contracting and hardware business and to the wider market. Henry’s first employee was his good friend Frederick Morris who consequently made the first batch of Pure Lead Paint. It was made by

Wattyl Wattyl has since been purchased by Valspar, an American company.

Wattyl is proud to be making a difference to a great number of Australian homes and major projects with its latest technology in surface coatings. Wattyl has grown from humble beginnings in 1915 through two world wars, the Great Depression and the boom of the Fifties right through into the new century.

Wattyl produces a broad range of paints, varnishes, lacquers and special purpose protective coatings. Our products are used in the domestic, commercial and industrial markets. With operations in Australia and New Zealand, Wattyl employs over 1000 people and began in 1915 when H.R. Walters developed a treatment for reviving French-polished furniture. This innovative product, known as ‘Crystal Veneer’ became an immediate success and laid the foundation of Wattyl’s future success.

Taubmans

One of the oldest paint brands in the market, Taubmans has been painting Australian homes for over 110 years. In 2007 PPG Industries acquired the Taubmans brand. Back in the early 1900s, George Taubman built the company on a foundation of technical superiority. Taubmans’ new owners, PPG, also have a long history of applying global technologies to gain a competitive edge.

Since its inception a century ago, Taubmans has grown to become a major player in the Australian architectural coatings market. It is also responsible for launching well known and innovative consumer paint brands such as Endure with Nanoguard, Living Proof Silk with Teflon®, Easy Coat with Microban® and All Weather with Dirt Shedding Technology. In the future, PPG and Taubmans are committed to continual growth by satisfying consumer needs through innovation.

ecolour

It isn’t commonly known that paints contain (and continue to off gas for up to six years after first application), nasty, health compromising chemicals (VOCs) that have been directly linked to serious illnesses including cancers and respiratory problems.

Over the last twenty years, in response to growing public awareness, the clever people at ecolour, right here in Australia in Byron Bay, have developed a premium acrylic paint range that is completely non-toxic – that’s right – ZERO-VOCs. ecolour paints behave the same as their toxic acrylic competition in every respect – durability, scrubability, coverage and, importantly, price are all the same – all that’s missing are the poisons. And the new paint smell. As soon as ecolour paint is dry it no longer has an odour, meaning rooms can be immediately re-occupied – reducing disruption to normal life to a minimum and making it the perfect choice for homes, hospitals, nurseries, hotels, childcare facilities, offices, and schools.

Made by recycling old engine oil (which would otherwise be burnt off as a cheap, carbon-heavy furnace fuel) into a harmless, non-toxic emulsion, ecolour paint has been awarded Carbon Neutral accreditation for its efforts towards sustainability. ecolour paint can be matched to any colour chart, making it available in over 35,000 colours.
